Darryl Jones: The unknown Stone - BBC News

Longtime Rolling Stones touring bassist Darryl Jones has just celebrated the 31st anniversary of his first concert with the band. The show, which took place on July 19, 1994, was a warm-up gig for the rock legend’s tour in support of its then-latest studio album, Voodoo Lounge, which had been released eight days earlier.

In honor of the anniversary, Jones posted a message on his social media pages.

The note reads, “After rehearsing in Toronto for several weeks to prepare for the Voodoo Lounge tour, we played a warm-up show at a club called RPM. Who would’ve known that all these years later we’d still be rocking (and of course, rolling). Well, most of us. God rest Charlie Watts.” Watts, The Stones’ longtime drummer, sadly passed away in 2021 at age 80.

Accompanying the message is a series of photos of Jones performing with The Rolling Stones at various shows during the past three decades. The pics show Darryl with Watts, singer Mick Jagger, and guitarists Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood.

Jones was hired as The Rolling Stones’ touring bassist in 1993 after Bill Wyman retired from the band. Wyman had played with The Stones since December 1962. Starting with Voodoo Lounge, Darryl also has played bass on at least some tracks on every Stones studio album since 1994, with the exception of the band’s latest record, 2023’s Hackney Diamonds.
