In a 2016 interview with&nbsp;<em>AXS TV<\/em>, which has recently been published online, Hagar even claims that his experience on 2004 Summer Tour was \u201cthe worst experience\u201d of his life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.gettyimages.com\/id\/107756218\/photo\/van-halen-during-van-halen-2004-tour-opening-at-greensboro-coliseum-in-greensboro-north.jpg?s=612x612&amp;w=0&amp;k=20&amp;c=I_o1vSzKiQDTBgJe_F86aTBwwvK6cls1Pq41zLPqDdQ=\" alt=\"Van Halen 2004 Tour Opening\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The reason for this, according to Hagar, is because of EVH\u2019s&nbsp;drug and alcohol abuse, and the impact it had on him both emotionally and physically. \u201cEddie was completely whacked out off the charts on alcohol and drugs,\u201d Hagar says. As a result, Eddie\u2019s guitar riffing was hugely impaired; tracks would be lost in a sea of gibberish, Hagar often unable to recognise what track Eddie was even performing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPoor guy\u2026 he was really in bad shape,\u201d Hagar mourns. \u201cI thought he was going to die.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.gettyimages.com\/id\/107756217\/photo\/van-halen-during-van-halen-2004-tour-opening-at-greensboro-coliseum-in-greensboro-north.jpg?s=612x612&amp;w=0&amp;k=20&amp;c=WIJNZRp5_cpEJ-5S-j-nsmR_v-A2pxslr4yktkehKUo=\" alt=\"Van Halen 2004 Tour Opening\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Inebriated, Eddie was totally unrecognisable. \u201cI\u2019ve never met a person like that in my life,\u201d he says. \u201c[He tried] to bust windows out of a G5 airplane at 4,000 feet with a wine bottle\u2026 it ain\u2019t even our plane, it\u2019s a rental plane!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sammy Hagar Speaks Candidly About David Lee Roth and Eddie Van Halen\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fv2drwex3oc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The experience left Hagar desperate to leave midway through the tour. 40-shows deep, Hagar was ready to pull the plug. \u201cI said, I can\u2019t do this anymore \u2013 the guy\u2019s going to die,\u201d he recalls. \u201cIt was horrible. He did horrible things to people. He treated people so badly\u2026 he was a complete raving maniac.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.gettyimages.com\/id\/107756219\/photo\/van-halen-during-van-halen-2004-tour-opening-at-greensboro-coliseum-in-greensboro-north.jpg?s=612x612&amp;w=0&amp;k=20&amp;c=9k9DBRq3rx8d5JyvOGcadS5zEgpW4_QqZJOCW9PnK_E=\" alt=\"Van Halen 2004 Tour Opening\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, his hands were tied. His contract made it impossible for him to quit the tour, as he\u2019d have to financially compensate the rest of the band if the tour had to be cancelled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite everything, the tour didn\u2019t ruin Hagar\u2019s memories of his late bandmate. He remembers Eddie fondly. \u201cEddie\u2019s a sweet human being,\u201d Hagar insists. \u201cHe\u2019s talented and he\u2019s a sweet wonderful guy.
