Seeing thousands of people singing their hearts out\u2014there\u2019s nothing like it. It charges you. It keeps you going,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s kind of addictive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While their energy on stage remains legendary, Taylor, 73, joked that he\u2019s content preparing in his own classic style\u2014no intense vocal warm-ups for him, just a splash of Irish whiskey and a Diet Coke before showtime. \u201cAdam\u2019s vocal rituals are impressive,\u201d he said with a grin. \u201cI\u2019m happy to cheer him on from the side.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Though Queen + Adam Lambert toured Europe and the UK last year, this marks their official North American return after a pandemic-forced hiatus. Since their last outing, all three musicians have kept creatively busy: May reissued solo projects, Taylor released his first solo album in nearly a decade, and Lambert unveiled High Drama, a genre-hopping collection of cover songs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But for May and Taylor, this collaboration with Lambert remains more than just a touring act\u2014it\u2019s the revival of something they once thought was gone forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAfter Freddie passed, we assumed Queen was finished,\u201d May shared, reflecting on the band\u2019s loss of Freddie Mercury in 1991. \u201cWe didn\u2019t look for a new singer\u2014we didn\u2019t think it would ever happen again. Then Adam appeared, almost out of nowhere.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Their first meeting came in 2009, when Lambert, then a contestant on American Idol, stunned audiences with his soaring range and theatrical flair. \u201cHis voice is something else. There\u2019s really nothing like it,\u201d said May. \u201cAnd the look\u2014the glam, the sparkle\u2014he was born to wear diamonds.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n But what makes Lambert a true fit for Queen, the band says, is his reverence for Mercury\u2019s legacy without trying to imitate him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cHe doesn\u2019t try to be Freddie. That\u2019s so important,\u201d May noted. \u201cHe honors him, as we all do, but he brings his own interpretation to every song. That\u2019s the magic\u2014he makes the music new again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Lambert agrees, calling their creative partnership a \u201cteam effort.\u201d \u201cFreddie laid the foundation for all of this. He was one of a kind. I don\u2019t try to replace him\u2014I just try to exist in the space he created, and have fun with it. From what I\u2019ve heard, he loved a bit of mischief too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The camaraderie between the trio is evident on and off the stage. \u201cAdam\u2019s kept us young,\u201d joked May. Lambert fired back with a laugh: \u201cI\u2019ve introduced them to eyeliner and high heels.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Taylor, meanwhile, offered a more serious note on Lambert\u2019s contributions. \u201cHaving a voice like Adam\u2019s at the front of the band\u2014it gives us confidence. We can trust him to carry these songs and make them soar.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n As for any talks of retirement? Don\u2019t count on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cNo way,\u201d May said definitively. \u201cTo be able to do this at the level we\u2019re doing it, and still love it\u2014it\u2019s a blessing. Why would we stop?
