What followed turned The River into one of the most heartbreaking performances in rock history."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Bruce Springsteen is one of the greatest songwriters and performers in rock and roll history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone knows how he can tear your soul apart with his songs, but he\u2019s just as capable of doing it with the spoken word, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1986, Bruce released\u00a0<em>Live 1975\u201385,\u00a0<\/em>a stunning 40-track collection of a decade of his best live performances with the E-Street Band.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And nestled at the end of side 7 of the box-set was a performance of \u2018The River\u2019, recorded at the Los Angeles Coliseum on September 30, 1985.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The River (Live at LA Coliseum, Los Angeles, CA - September 1985)\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RuhUHun9YXI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a typically great performance of a great song, but what really makes it must-listen is the five-and-a-half minute bit of storytelling from Bruce, set to a lilting jam from the E-Street Band.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bruce has the entire audience in the palm of his hands as he tells the true-life tale of his dad\u2019s response when he failed his army physical during the Vietnam war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imgs.goldradio.com\/images\/269154?crop=16_9&amp;width=660&amp;relax=1&amp;format=webp&amp;signature=igFQ8BOGnXik6hEA_bgjAxj4DSY=\" alt=\"Bruce Springsteen and the Vietnam war\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Bruce Springsteen and the Vietnam war.&nbsp;Picture: Alamy<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When I was growing up, me and my dad used to go at it all the time, over almost anything. But uh, I used to have really long hair, way down past my shoulders. I was 17 or 18\u2026 oh, man, he used to hate it. And we got to where we\u2019d fight so much that I\u2019d, that I\u2019d spend a lot of time out of the house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And in the summertime it wasn\u2019t so bad, as it was warm and your friends were out. But in the winter, I remember standing downtown and it would get so cold. And when the wind would blow, I, I had this phonebooth that I used to stand in. And I used to call my girl like for hours at a time, just talking to her all night long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And finally I\u2019d get my nerve up to go home, and I\u2019d stand there in the driveway and he\u2019d be waiting for me in the kitchen. And I\u2019d tuck my hair down in my collar, and I\u2019d walk in, and he\u2019d call me back to sit down with him. And the first thing he\u2019d always ask me was what did I think I was doing with myself. And the worst part about it was I could never explain it to him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I remember I got into a motorcycle accident once, and I was laid up in bed and he had a barber come in and cut my hair. And, man, I can remember telling him that I hated him, and that I would never ever forget it. And he used to tell me, \u201cMan, I can\u2019t wait till the army gets you. When the army gets you, they\u2019re gonna make a man out of you. They\u2019re gonna cut all that hair off, and they\u2019ll make a man out of you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And this was in, I guess, \u201968, and there was a lot of guys from the neighborhood going to Vietnam. I remember the drummer in my first band coming over my house with his marine uniform on saying that he was going and that he didn\u2019t know where it was. And a lot of guys went and a lot of guys didn\u2019t come back. And the lot that came back weren\u2019t the same anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I remember the day I got my draft notice. I hid it from my folks and three days before my physical me and my friends went out and stayed up all night. And we got on the bus to go that morning, man, and we were all so scared. And I went and I failed. I came home\u2026 It\u2019s nothing to applaud about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But I remember coming home after I\u2019d been gone for three days, and walking in the kitchen and my mother and father were sitting there. My dad said, \u201cWhere you been?\u201d I said, uh, \u201cI went to take my physical\u201d. He says, \u201cWhat happened?\u201d I said, \u201cThey didn\u2019t take me.\u201d And he said, \u201cThat\u2019s good.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bruce Springsteen - Born in the U.S.A. (Official Video)\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EPhWR4d3FJQ?start=1&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>War and its effect on American soldiers who come home, as well as those who don\u2019t, has long been a theme in Bruce Springsteen\u2019s work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s most notable on \u2018Born in the USA\u2019, which contrasted the tubthumping of those back home with the suffering and poverty of the veterans who returned from Vietnam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Springsteen himself was drafted in 1967 when he turned 18, but later told&nbsp;<em>Rolling Stone&nbsp;<\/em>that he played up his bike accident injuries to make sure he wouldn\u2019t go to war, being given a 4-F classification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI had some friends, very close friends of mine\u2026 guys who came home in wheelchairs and, then, I didn\u2019t go,\u201d Springsteen told Tom Hanks at a Tribeca Film Festival conversation at the Beacon Theatre in 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bruce Springsteen - War\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mn91L9goKfQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was a stone-cold draft dodger. I pulled the whole&nbsp;<em>Alice\u2019s Restaurant<\/em>&nbsp;[Arthur Penn\u2019s 1969 movie about Arlo Guthrie\u2019s real-life attempt to dodge the draft].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2018I\u2019m sorry, sir. I don\u2019t understand what you are saying because I am high on LSD.\u2019 I did everything in the draft-dodgers text book.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He continued: \u201cSo, perhaps, I felt guilty about that later on. I had friends who went. I had friends who went and died.
