How Bruce Springsteen\u2019s Documentary Pays Tribute to His Mom Adele, Who Died in January<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Bruce Springsteen\u00a0is remembering his mom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Oct. 25,\u00a0Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band<\/em>\u00a0premiered on Hulu and Disney+. The documentary dives into the preparations the singer, 75, and his famous backing band took before embarking on their most recent tour, which began in 2023. It continued into 2024, and the band also has European dates booked for 2025. The new tour was their first in six years, which Springsteen calls \u201ca lot longer break than I planned\u201d in the documentary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Though most of the film, directed by longtime Springsteen collaborator Thom Zimny, is focused on the band and how the concerts come together, the final moments of the feature focus on something more personal: Springsteen\u2019s mom Adele.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the final moments of the doc \u2014 which include a live performance of the song \u201cTenth Avenue Freeze-Out\u201d\u00a0 \u2014 a video plays of Springsteen and his mom Adele dancing together on a porch to \u201cIn the Mood\u201d by Glenn Miller. At the end of the clip, she cheers and gives him a hug and kiss on the cheek, while Springsteen says, \u201cBeautiful, beautiful.\u201d Then, a card on screen says, \u201cDedicated to Adele Springsteen,\u201d and notes her birth year, 1926, and the year of her death, 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adele died on Jan. 31\u00a0of this year. At the time, Springsteen posted on\u00a0Instagram\u00a0the same video that features in the documentary. He also included lyrics to the song \u201cThe Wish.\u201d The record was originally released in 1988 as part of Springsteen\u2019s album\u00a0Tracks<\/em>, a four-disc box set with 66 songs, many of them never-before-released.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Wish\u201d was also part of the \u201cThunder Road\u201d singer\u2019s\u00a0Springsteen on Broadway<\/em>\u00a0show, a concert residency he performed from 2017 to 2018. He returned for more performances in 2021, and the concert was released as both an album and as a Netflix special.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On stage, Springsteen called his mom \u201cbright\u201d and \u201chappy.\u201d He continued, \u201cShe\u2019d merrily make conversation with a broom handle, she believed that there was good faith, good heart, good hope in all citizens. She gave the world a lot more credit perhaps than it deserves, but that was her way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy mom was truthfulness, consistency, good humor, professionalism, grace, kindness, optimism, civility, fairness, pride in yourself, responsibility, love, faith in your family, commitment, joy in your work, and a never-say-die thirst for living \u2014 for living. For living and for life. And most importantly, for dancing,\u201d Springsteen said. He recounted how his mom and his aunts especially loved the big bands of the \u201840s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy mom is seven years into Alzheimer\u2019s. And she\u2019s 93,\u201d he said at the time. \u201cBut dancing, and the desire and need to dance is something that, it hasn\u2019t left her. Remains an essential primal part of who she is, it\u2019s beyond language, it\u2019s more powerful than memory, and when she comes in the door, we make sure there\u2019s music on. She wants to dance, ya know. These things were the embodiment of my mother, they were her heart, she carried on and she carries on as if they never, never deserted her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The song \u201cThe Wish\u201d tells the story of the first guitar his mother bought him. During the chorus, he sings, \u201cIt ain\u2019t no phone call on Sunday, flowers or a Mother\u2019s Day card \/ It ain\u2019t no house on a hill with a garden and a nice little yard \/ I got my hot rod down on Bond Street, I\u2019m older but you\u2019ll know me in a glance \/\u00a0 We\u2019ll find us a little rock \u2018n\u2019 roll bar and we\u2019ll go out and dance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adele and Springsteen\u2019s father Douglas Frederick \u201cDutch\u201d Springsteen married in 1948 and were together until his death in 1998. The couple also\u00a0shared Bruce\u2019s two sisters, Virginia and Pam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
