Jon Bon Jovi reflects fondly on his New Jersey roots and his longstanding admiration for Bruce Springsteen, who hails from nearby Freehold, just 18 miles from Bon Jovi\u2019s hometown of Sayreville. On November 25, Bon Jovi took over SiriusXM\u2019s E Street Radio\u2014devoted to Springsteen\u2019s music\u2014where he revisited early memories of their budding friendship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe first time I caught The E Street Band live was at the Spectrum in Philly,\u201d Bon Jovi recalled. \u201cThey were just transitioning from theaters to arenas. During \u2018Spirits in the Night,\u2019 Clarence Clemons unleashed this incredible sax solo, and by the time it ended, Bruce had somehow made his way into the upper level, sitting among the crowd. That moment stuck with me. I even borrowed that move years later\u2014it was just too cool not to.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bon Jovi likened Springsteen\u2019s band to royalty for New Jersey musicians. \u201cFor kids like me, The E Street Band were our Beatles. I\u2019d drive down to Asbury Park as a teenager, just trying to get a foothold in the bar scene. And sometimes, you\u2019d walk into a place and see half of The Asbury Jukes or members of The E Street Band casually hanging out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also shared a pivotal moment from his youth when, while performing Springsteen\u2019s \u201cPromised Land\u201d with his first bar band, Atlantic City Expressway, Springsteen himself unexpectedly joined in. \u201cIt was 1978. I turned to the side mid-song, and there was Bruce at the mic with me. I was still in high school. It felt like a Beatles moment\u2014surreal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That connection came full circle decades later during the 2024 MusiCares gala, where Bon Jovi was honored as Person of the Year. Springsteen joined him on stage again, this time during performances of \u201cLegendary,\u201d \u201cWho Says You Can\u2019t Go Home,\u201d and yes\u2014\u201cThe Promised Land.\u201d \u201cIt felt like time folded in on itself,\u201d Bon Jovi said. \u201cHere we were, 40 years later, and Bruce was still right there, sharing the stage.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He noted that Springsteen showed up just days after the loss of his own mother. \u201cHe didn\u2019t have to be there, and I would\u2019ve understood. But he came\u2014to support MusiCares and to support me. I\u2019ll never forget that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an interview with PEOPLE in April, Bon Jovi emphasized the depth of their friendship. \u201cThere\u2019s a level of understanding between us that\u2019s rare. We\u2019ve lived through similar highs and lows, and he\u2019s more than a peer\u2014he\u2019s like an older brother to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
