KUNIVA: THE SECRET 1996 RAP BATTLE THAT CREATED D12 \u2014 AND CHANGED HIP-HOP FOREVER"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two D12 albums hit double platinum in the early 2000s. \u201cDevil\u2019s Night\u201d and \u201cD12 World\u201d were both hot albums, as Eminem was one of the most popular MCs in the world at the time; D12 was his crew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Eminem - Somebody Save Me &amp; Houdini (Live from the MTV VMA\u2019s 2024)\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OYYPnBboGao?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Everything started&nbsp;at Detroit\u2019s Hip Hop Shop. On a chilly February night in \u201996, Marshall Mathers jumped into battle with Kuniva while Proof looked on. That raw showdown sparked what would become a hip-hop force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe all knew each other growing up in Detroit. I used to sneak Em into my school lunchroom just so he could battle,\u201d Proof wrote on the&nbsp;D12 website. \u201cLater, when we started battling once a month at Maurice Malone\u2019s Hip Hop Shop, everybody had a crew. So, we decided to form our own.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taking their name from \u201cThe Dirty Dozen,\u201d a tough 1967 film, Proof and Bizarre started small. Soon, they brought in battle-tested talent from Detroit\u2019s rap scene. Each rapper created an alter ego, turning six MCs into twelve wild characters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In \u201999, tragedy hit when Bugz died. Swifty McVay joined up, keeping the group\u2019s energy alive. Five years later, they grabbed the MTV Europe Music Award for Best Hip-Hop Act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images2.minutemediacdn.com\/image\/upload\/c_crop,x_0,y_242,w_2464,h_1386\/c_fill,w_720,ar_16:9,f_auto,q_auto,g_auto\/images\/GettyImages\/mmsport\/344\/01jrer4d0z9sv67r3x7z.jpg\" alt=\"Why did Eminem leave the band D12?\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Five songs made them famous: \u201cFight Music\u201d rocked speakers, \u201cPurple Pills\u201d got people moving, \u201cMy Band\u201d had everyone singing, while \u201cS\u2014 on You\u201d and \u201cHow Come\u201d showed their raw talent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before the fame, they owned Detroit\u2019s underground. Every week, they\u2019d destroy opponents in freestyle battles, earning street cred that no money could touch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Proof died in 2006, the group started to fade. Twelve years later, Mathers dropped \u201cStepping Stone,\u201d officially ending D12\u2019s journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images2.minutemediacdn.com\/image\/upload\/c_crop,x_0,y_99,w_3000,h_1687\/c_fill,w_720,ar_16:9,f_auto,q_auto,g_auto\/images\/GettyImages\/mmsport\/344\/01jreq6125hdnfzwcmkh.jpg\" alt=\"Why did Eminem leave the band D12?\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Detroit\u2019s mid-90s battle scene created more than just hits \u2013 it made a template.
