Over the decades, he had the opportunity to share the stage with a vast number of musicians on special occasions and see many incredible bands perform. He never really understood them because he could not figure out what they were doing during their live improvisations and he even said he was not sure if the band itself knew what they were trying to do. \u201cSome improv bands I like. I love the Allman Brothers and I was listening to a lot of blues and of course that\u2019s all improv. (But) I never really quite got the Grateful Dead.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have a lot of respect for Jerry Garcia, but I could never tell what the hell they were doing. I\u2019m not sure they knew either. But I was open to their input\u2026 To be able to improvise yourself, you\u2019ve got to study other people. You\u2019ve gotta not be afraid of it and you\u2019ve gotta have enough licks to show that you can just play.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"joe-walsh-continued\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Joe_Walsh_continued\"><\/span>Joe Walsh continued:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou get your mind out of the way and just let it go. So (I had) all kinds of influences. I was studying Cat Stevens a lot, and, of course, the Beatles. I studied all the Beatles songs, because I was trying to figure out the craft also,\u201d he told\u00a0Harford Courant\u00a0about Jerry Garcia and the Dead. Walsh was not that into the Dead\u2019s music but he did have the chance to meet a few members of the band, including the late Bob Weir. In 2025 he even posted on his social media a\u00a0photo\u00a0with the late guitarist and singer Bob Weir, alongside the bassist Timothy B. Schmidt and Queen\u2019s guitarist Brian May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They attended one of the\u00a0Eagles\u2019 concerts at the Sphere in Las Vegas, where most of Weir\u2019s final live performances took place. Throughout 2025 he played at the venue with Dead &amp; Company, Grateful Dead\u2019s spin-off band featuring John Mayer. On the caption, Walsh wrote, quoting his solo song \u201cLife\u2019s Been Good\u201d: \u201cEverybody\u2019s so different. We haven\u2019t changed. Night #32.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Walsh didn\u2019t post a statement about Weir\u2019s passing in January 2026 at the age of 78. But the Eagles, as a band\u00a0shared\u00a0a special tribute to him. \u201cBob Weir\u2019s dedication to his craft was inspirational. Although our music styles were different, we always admired his commitment to pushing himself to be as good as he could be. You can\u2019t improvise the way Bob did, unless you have the ability to play as well as he did.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"the-band-continued\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_band_continued\"><\/span>The band continued:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMusicians admired him and fans adored him. We were fortunate enough to see one of his final performances at the Sphere. Rock on, Bob. You have left a beautiful legacy,\u201d the band said in an official statement. As said, they had the chance to see one of Bob\u2019s final performances at the Las Vegas technological venue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Curiously, Weir had already performed some Eagles songs live during his solo shows with Wolf Bros in 2023. During his concert at the in Menlo Park, California, for example, he covered \u201cNew Kid in Town\u201d and \u201cHeartache Tonight.\u201d The main reason he played those tracks that night was that songwriter, singer, and guitarist J.D. Souther joined him on stage, as he co-wrote both songs with the Eagles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"why-the-eagles-live-improvisation-differed-from-the-grateful-deads\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_the_Eagles_live_improvisation_differed_from_the_Grateful_Deads\"><\/span>Why the Eagles\u2019 live improvisation differed from the Grateful Dead\u2019s<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As Joe Walsh said, he was a fan of bands that improvised when playing live, such as the\u00a0Allman Brothers. But in his view, the Grateful Dead\u2019s improvisation was a bit more confusing. He once explained why the Eagles\u2019 music and live shows never really left much space for improvisation. According to him, their approach was more structured, which helps explain why he was not particularly into what the Dead were doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI miss playing live, and because the Eagles are kind of a structured musical situation \u2014 it\u2019s not exactly note for note, but it\u2019s more structured, say, than what I\u2019m doing. There\u2019s less room to improvise \u2014 you can\u2019t really turn up that loud, because the focus is on the vocals. I miss playing and I just decided that since my album was done and coming out, I\u2019ve wanted to play for a long time with Kunkel and with Chocolate. I\u2019ve just decided, \u2018what the heck, I\u2019ll just go out and turn it up. I won\u2019t take another guitar player, just turn up and improvise like the old days,\u2019 you know?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He continued:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Grateful Dead - Truckin&#039; (New York, NY 10\/30\/80) (Official Live Video)\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mSur0mFviT0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very healthy, I think, for everybody in the Eagles to be able to play with other people. Glenn\u2019s in working on a solo album, and he\u2019s not using anybody from the Eagles. It\u2019s real healthy for all of us to play in situations with other people, \u2019cause you get to be like the Who or the Rolling Stones. Them guys have played together for like 15 years. They\u2019re all to the point where they can\u2019t play with anybody else. It makes everybody better musicians,\u201d Joe Walsh said in an interview with\u00a0David Gans\u00a0in 1981.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike Walsh, his former bandmate, the guitarist Don Felder is a big fan of the Grateful Dead. He had the chance to see the band playing at Woodstock and was impressed by their performance. \u201cJust heard of the passing of Bob Weir. I first saw Bob at Woodstock with the Grateful Dead and was blown away by that whole band, and the musicianship. I feel so blessed to have been able to have him sing on \u201cRock You\u201d from American Rock and Roll. Until we meet again, amigo\u200b\u200b,\u201d Don Felder said on his\u00a0social media\u00a0in 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"don-henley-mentioned-the-deadheads-in-his-solo-hit-boys-of-summer\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Don_Henley_mentioned_the_Deadheads_in_his_solo_hit_%E2%80%9CBoys_of_Summer%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>Don Henley mentioned the Deadheads in his solo hit \u201cBoys of Summer\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>An interesting connection between the Eagles and the Grateful Dead is that the band\u2019s drummer and singer\u00a0Don Henley\u00a0mentioned the famous \u201cdeadheads\u201d in his biggest solo hit \u201cBoys of Summer\u201d. \u201cOut on the road today. I saw a dead end sticker on a Cadillac. A little voice inside my head said, \u2018Don\u2019t look back. You can never look back,&#8217;\u201d the lyrics say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Talking to\u00a0NME\u00a0back in 1985, he explained why he included that part mentioning the Grateful Dead fans. \u201cI was driving down the San Diego freeway and got passed by a $21,000 Cadillac Seville. (It was) The status symbol of the Right-wing upper-middle-class American bourgeoisie. All the guys with the blue blazers with the crests and the grey pants (were there) \u2013 and there was this Grateful Dead \u2018Deadhead\u2019 bumper sticker on it!\u201d Don Henley said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Grateful Dead and the Eagles are two of the most influential and successful American bands of all time. However, they followed very different paths to achieve that status, as the Dead did not sell large numbers of studio records like many of their peers. They were a unique case of a band that became one of the highest-grossing live acts of all time, even though their record sales did not reflect those numbers. This is why they were often referred to as essentially a live band, known for delivering an exceptional concert experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, the Eagles, in addition to being highly successful in terms of ticket sales, were also one of the best-selling bands of all time. Their album \u201cGreatest Hits (1971\u20131975)\u201d is the best-selling album in the USA, more than 40 million copies were sold.
