Electric Angels guitarist Ryan Roxie recently revealed how KISS allegedly stole their song title without providing any compensation. He shared his account of the incident on\u00a0The Hair Metal Guru.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Roxie explained how the band worked with Bruce Kulick to record demo songs, including one that would later become controversial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBruce Kulick, who\u2019s hanging around the whole scene at that point, says, \u2018Look, I\u2019m in getting into producing. I know how what\u2019s going on. I can hear the songs that are there. Let\u2019s record three songs,’\u201d Roxie said. \u201cAnd then, we go in the studio. And again, those were songs that we would shop to record labels. And ultimately not get the thumbs up from any of them on the west coast.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The guitarist described how their fortunes changed when they moved to the east coast with the same material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhen we move to the east coast, same demos, same sort of may maybe a remix here or there, but that\u2019s what closed the deal over on the east coast,\u201d he continued. \u201cBut the three songs in particular were Rattlesnake Kisses. That was number one that uh ended up actually becoming the single on Atlantic Records. another song called Tiger Tiger and didn\u2019t make the album or anything like that, but still a really great song. You can I think you can actually even find it on the Music Machine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Roxie then revealed the controversial incident involving the third song they recorded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAnd the third song that we recorded uh was called \u2018Put the \u2018EX\u2019 in Sex\u2019. And you know what\u2019s coming because it just so happened about 6 months later or you know a year later KISS comes out with a song and their newest single called Let\u2019s Put the X in Sex,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd we were like up in arms. We\u2019re like how could you do this Bruce? Because obviously Bruce had played it for Gene and Paul and they\u2019re like, \u2018Ah good, we like this title. Let\u2019s take it.’\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The band initially believed they would receive compensation for the similar title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSo we\u2019re thinking, \u2018Well, you we\u2019re going to be able to be rest easy now cuz KISS has now taken our song and we\u2019ll be able to get some sort of credit and publishing off of it,’\u201d Roxie explained. \u201cAnd then Gene simply goes to us one time, he goes, \u2018Uh, you cannot uh copyright a song title, just so you know.\u2019 And it was like, \u2018What? Wait a second.\u2019 He goes, \u2018Yeah, yeah. Think of how many songs have the word love in it, you know, or blue eyes. Think about it.\u2019 And then we were like, oh, Gene\u2019s done it again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
