Paul McCartney\u00a0and\u00a0Pretenders\u00a0frontwoman\u00a0Chrissie Hynde\u00a0have been friends since the late 1970s. The multi-talented singer-songwriters have long shared a bond thanks to their mutual support of the animal-rights organization PETA, while both also worked with producer Chris Thomas during the late 1970s and early 1980s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, Hynde appears in the new McCartney documentary Man On The Run<\/em>, which focuses on Paul\u2019s years with his post-Beatles band Wings. Chrissie and Paul have also occasionally shared a stage. One particular memorable performance they did together took place at the star-studded tribute concert for late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins on September 3, 2023, at Wembley Stadium in London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hynde had performed with The Pretenders earlier in the show, with Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl on bass. McCartney was a surprise guest who hit the stage with the Foo Fighters near the end of the concert. Grohl first introduced Hynde and then teased that she\u2019d \u201cbrought a friend with her today.\u201d Dave then announced that the good friend was McCartney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Beatles legend, with his bass strapped on, then stepped up to the mic and said, \u201cGod bless Taylor.\u201d Paul McCartney then declared, \u201cMe and Chrissie are gonna do a song here that I haven\u2019t done since recording it 100 years ago. I\u2019ve never done it as a duet, but we\u2019re gonna do it tonight for the first time \u2026 for you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

McCartney and the Foos, with acclaimed jazz drummer Omar Hakim sitting in, then kicked into a rare live performance of the classic 1969\u00a0Beatles\u00a0song \u201cOh! Darling\u201d from the\u00a0Abbey Road<\/em>\u00a0album. McCartney and Hynde alternated on lead vocals during the verses, while Chrissie belted out the choruses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Besides at the Hawkins tribute concert in London, McCartney has rarely if ever played \u201cOh! Darling\u201d live. The song apparently puts a serious strain on Paul\u2019s voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even when he first recorded \u201cOh! Darling\u201d in 1969, McCartney reportedly took a long time laying down the vocals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the 2018 book The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions<\/em>, engineer Alan Parsons recalled, \u201cPaul came in several days running to do the lead vocal on \u2018Oh! Darling.\u2019 He\u2019d come in, sing it and say, \u2018No, that\u2019s not it, I\u2019ll try it again tomorrow.\u2019 He only tried it once per day, I suppose he wanted to capture a certain rawness which could only be done once before the voice changed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parsons added, \u201cI remember him saying, \u2018Five years ago I could have done this in a flash,\u2019 referring, I suppose, to the days [when The Beatles recorded covers of early rock-and-roll songs like] \u2018Long Tall Sally\u2019 and \u2018Kansas City\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chrissie Hynde also performed with Paul McCartney in 1999 at a tribute concert Chrissie co-organized for Paul\u2019s late first wife, Linda. The show, called \u201cHere, There and Everywhere: A Concert for Linda,\u201d took place at the Royal Albert Hall in London on April 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

McCartney played a few songs at the event, including a version of the Fab Four\u2019s \u201cAll My Loving\u201d with the entire lineup of the show joining him. He ended the concert with The Beatles\u2019 \u201cLet It Be.\u201d Hynde, Elvis Costello, and George Michael also joined in on vocals on that tune.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2023, Hynde yet again brought out McCartney on stage to greet the crowd at the end of The Pretenders\u2019 set at the U.K.\u2019s famous Glastonbury Festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
