At the time, the atmosphere was far from hostile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lopez remembers Trump being &#8220;very nice&#8221; and &#8220;inquisitive,&#8221; even introducing the drummer to Melania. In a moment that seems almost impossible given today&#8217;s headlines, Trump sent a message back to the rock legend: <strong>&#8220;Tell Bruce I\u2019m his biggest fan.&#8221;<\/strong> \u26f3<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fast forward to today, and that fandom has curdled into a public war of words. At 77 years old, the drummer says he has moved past the era of &#8220;extreme&#8221; views, even if he finds the current national divide difficult to stomach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am not against what Bruce is saying now,\u201d Lopez clarified. \u201cMaybe when I was 20, I was a little more extreme, but I\u2019m 77 now, so the extremities are gone. It\u2019s so divided, the political part. It\u2019s a tough one on me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bond formed in the garages and dive bars of Asbury Park remains unshakable. The two still talk regularly and hang out whenever the opportunity arises. Sometimes the calls are light\u2014Bruce reaching out just because he hasn&#8217;t seen his old friend in a while, inviting him to &#8220;come around here.&#8221; Other times, the calls carry the somber weight of time, with Lopez being the one to break the news when a member of their old road crew passes away. \ud83e\udd1d\ud83d\udd4a\ufe0f<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, Lopez\u2019s perspective serves as a reminder of a different era of rock and roll\u2014one where the music was meant to bridge gaps rather than highlight them.
