He was a mate of Tim [Staffell, singer with May and Taylor\u2019s pre-Queen band Smile] from Ealing college. He was on the periphery, just a mate, really. And he had musical aspirations. But we were quite good players and we weren\u2019t really sure if he could sing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut his drive and determination to write original stuff was great. And of course we became huge friends because we had the stall. We were living in each others\u2019 pockets, scrubbing together to eat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What was a night out with Roger Taylor and Freddie Mercury like in the early days? Were you hanging out at the trendy clubs?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOh no, we couldn\u2019t afford stuff like that. But we really did want to be hugely successful. It was a measure of our foolish vanity in those days.
