Sum 41<\/a>\u00a0frontman\u00a0Deryck Whibley<\/a>\u00a0is reflecting on his relationship with\u00a0Avril Lavigne<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 and how hostile responses from both of their fans got to his head.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his new memoir\u00a0Walking Disaster: My Life Through Heaven and Hell<\/em><\/a>, the pop-punk musician recalled the toll of heightened media scrutiny during his romance with the \u201cComplicated\u201d singer. \u201cI felt unsafe and harassed everywhere I went, and now with all the extra attention on my relationship with Avril, it had gotten even worse,\u201d he wrote. \u201cI wanted all of it out of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whibley said that the intense disapproval from Sum 41 fans weighed heavily on him during the relationship. \u201cWhile we loved being together, it seemed our fans didn\u2019t feel the same way,\u201d he wrote. \u201cI got a lot of flack for dating a pop star. Sometimes at our shows, people would bring signs that read, \u2018Avril Sucks!\u2019 When I signed autographs after the show people would flat-out say, \u2018Why are you with her? Her music is s\u2014.'\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lavigne\u2019s listeners weren\u2019t much better. \u201cHer fans thought I was ugly and not good enough for her,\u201d Whibley remembered. \u201cAll of this made us retreat into our own relationship. Us against the world, f\u2014 \u2019em all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The disapproval became so dramatic that Whibley feared for his safety \u2014 with good reason. \u201cOur management had been notified by the FBI that I was receiving credible death threats for being with Avril,\u201d he said. \u201cNormally, they ignore these things, but these letters were a bit more sophisticated, and had no fingerprints on them. They suggested that the band bring on professional security that dealt with this kind of stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whibley said that the media also treated him with immense cruelty. \u201cIf I was with Avril, they either looked down on me or ignored me entirely,\u201d he remembered. \u201cWhenever online press used a photo of us, they didn\u2019t bother mentioning Sum 41, and snarky writers started calling me \u2018Mr. Lavigne\u2019 or \u2018Avril\u2019s troll of a husband.\u2019 Paparazzi would taunt me with Avril\u2019s success, trying to get me to react on camera. As if my life could get any worse!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The musicians\u2019 relationship also faced resistance from Whibley\u2019s Sum 41 bandmates. \u201cI knew the band hated the fact that Avril and I were dating, so I was hesitant to talk about my personal life with them, too,\u201d he wrote. \u201cI had heard from friends that they were s\u2014 -talking us behind my back, and whenever Avril came around they acted weird and uncomfortable and didn\u2019t make much of an effort to make her feel part of our club.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whibley acknowledged that his ex-wife \u201ccan be strange and shy\u201d around people whom she doesn\u2019t know well, noting that her small-town upbringing affected her social skills. That didn\u2019t stop her from picking up the negative vibes, though. \u201cAvril was savvy enough to pick up on the fact that my band didn\u2019t seem to like her, and she would often ask me if they hated her,\u201d he wrote. \u201cI just said, \u2018Of course the guys like you! They\u2019re just tough to get to know at first, but they\u2019ll come around.'\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The band\u2019s negativity toward Lavigne was so intense, Whibley said, that former Sum 41 drummer Stevo Jocz called her out for the group faltering. \u201cWe all knew how much he hated Avril and that relationship,\u201d the singer wrote. \u201cHe had outright blamed it for a lot of the failure of the\u00a0Underclass Hero<\/em>\u00a0album. I don\u2019t remember what we were arguing about, but in a moment of anger, and drinking, he once said, \u2018We\u2019re not doing as well anymore because you dated Paris Hilton and now are with Avril Lavigne.'\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
