Having spent his youth learning by ear from records, he adapted to Barrett\u2019s idiosyncratic techniques with surprising ease\u2014enhancing them with more refined musicianship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After Barrett officially left the band at the end of 1967, Gilmour stepped up. He performed Barrett\u2019s material from The Piper at the Gates of Dawn<\/em> and also brought similar creative elements to A Saucerful of Secrets<\/em>, shaping the band\u2019s evolving sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n By the end of the 1960s, Pink Floyd\u2019s music had shifted away from the childlike psychedelia that defined Barrett\u2019s era. It was becoming more expansive and ambient\u2014a direction largely driven by Gilmour\u2019s evolving guitar work. His tone and phrasing laid the groundwork for what would become the band\u2019s signature sound in the 1970s progressive rock movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Like many of his generation, Gilmour\u2019s first musical love was the blues. But he kept his influences broad, studying players from different genres and incorporating their techniques into his own. This eclectic foundation helped him forge a unique guitar style known for its emotional weight and clarity\u2014focused more on expression than on speed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In a 1985 interview with Guitar Classics<\/em>, Gilmour described his wide-ranging inspirations. \u201cI was a blues fan, but I was an all-around music fan,\u201d he said. \u201cFrom Leadbelly to B.B. King, and later Clapton, Roy Buchanan, Jeff Beck, Eddie Van Halen\u2014even Mark Knopfler. He brought a refreshing tone to guitar playing that had been missing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Asked whether he had ever consciously borrowed from others, Gilmour was candid: \u201cI was trying to learn 12-string acoustic like Leadbelly, lead guitar like Hank Marvin, and then Clapton. All of that worked its way into my playing.\u201d He added that the best advice he could give any aspiring musician was simple: \u201cI copied\u2014don\u2019t be afraid to copy. Eventually, something of your own will emerge.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n As time passed and his legacy grew, Gilmour became less concerned with studying others, but admitted he still absorbed inspiration when it struck. \u201cThese days, I don\u2019t intentionally borrow licks, but if something fits, I\u2019ll use it,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m sure Knopfler and Van Halen still influence me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Yet despite his reverence for Eddie Van Halen, Gilmour acknowledged a major gap in their styles: \u201cI can\u2019t play like Eddie Van Halen\u2014I wish I could,\u201d he confessed. \u201cI\u2019ve tried learning that kind of technique, but it doesn\u2019t come naturally. I don\u2019t know if I\u2019ll ever really get the hang of it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n While Van Halen filled every moment with lightning-fast precision, Gilmour\u2019s approach thrived in the spaces between notes. He knew his strength wasn\u2019t in technical wizardry\u2014but in crafting melodies that resonated emotionally.
