Known for their unorthodox approach to songwriting, they built their legacy by constantly pushing boundaries\u2014and nowhere is that more evident than in their 1971 track \u2018Echoes\u2019. Featured on the album Meddle, the song isn\u2019t just music\u2014it\u2019s an immersive 23-minute journey that David Gilmour once called a \u201cmasterwork\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Before Meddle, the band had already made a name for themselves in Britain, but they were still evolving. Their previous albums, Ummagumma and Atom Heart Mother, marked a shift away from their early psychedelic sound, yet lacked the cohesion of their later work. It wasn\u2019t until Meddle that Pink Floyd finally tapped into the identity that would define them. And at the heart of that transformation was \u2018Echoes\u2019.<\/p>\n<div><!-- Horizontal --><\/div>\n<p>\u2018Echoes\u2019 wasn\u2019t just a standout track\u2014it was the foundation. The band even built the album\u2019s opening song, \u2018One of These Days\u2019, from ideas developed during the \u2018Echoes\u2019 sessions. Without it, the album might not have worked. Gilmour later reflected on its importance in a 1993 Guitar World interview, saying:<\/p>\n<div><!-- Within Posts --><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWell, I think \u2018Echoes\u2019 is the masterwork of the album \u2013 the one where we were all discovering what Pink Floyd is about. \u2018One Of These Days\u2019 is a little subsidiary piece that came out of the work on \u2018Echoes\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He continued:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI always loved it. It\u2019s seminal, I suppose, yeah. A lot shorter, in any case \u2013 better for radio play. Meddle is really the album where all four of us were finding our feet \u2013 the way we wanted Pink Floyd to be. Much more than on Ummagumma or Atom Heart Mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Echoes\u2019 wasn\u2019t just essential to Meddle\u2014it also helped shape the future of the band. Gilmour has often pointed to a creative lineage between \u2018A Saucerful of Secrets\u2019, Atom Heart Mother, and \u2018Echoes\u2019, saying that these pieces led naturally to the creation of their magnum opus, The Dark Side of the Moon.<\/p>\n<p>He explained:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you take \u2018A Saucerful of Secrets\u2019, \u2018Atom Heart Mother\u2019 and \u2018Echoes\u2019 \u2013 all lead logically to Dark Side of the Moon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the studio, \u2018Echoes\u2019 also held deep emotional meaning for Gilmour as a live performer. He once named it his favorite Pink Floyd song to play onstage, particularly during his 2006 solo tour, which featured the late Rick Wright. In 2020, he made it clear that the song\u2019s legacy is tied to Wright, saying:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018Echoes\u2019, I would say, was terrific fun to play, particularly on my last solo tour and the solo tour in 2006 with Rick Wright. That was terrific, and it couldn\u2019t and shouldn\u2019t be played again now he\u2019s dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Today, \u2018Echoes\u2019 remains a turning point in Pink Floyd\u2019s history\u2014the moment they fully realized who they were and the kind of band they could become.
