In a 1967 interview, Jagger was asked about Dylan\u2019s evolving sound. While he expressed admiration for Highway 61 Revisited<\/em> and Bringing It All Back Home<\/em>, he scoffed when Rainy Day Women<\/em> came up. \u201cThat one?\u201d he said with a smirk. \u201cThat\u2019s nonsense. Utter nonsense.\u201d It was a rare, public dismissal from one titan to another\u2014a moment of artistic disagreement in a decade otherwise defined by collaboration and mutual influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But what\u2019s truly fascinating is that Rainy Day Women<\/em>, the very song Jagger dismissed as \u201cnonsense,\u201d would go on to influence several emerging acts in the late 1960s\u2014including one band that would eventually rival the Stones in influence: The Band<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Formed originally as Dylan\u2019s backing group during his infamous electric tour of 1965\u20131966, The Band developed their own style that fused rock, folk, gospel, and Americana. And while The Basement Tapes<\/em> sessions are often cited as the foundation for The Band\u2019s sound, members of the group\u2014particularly Levon Helm and Robbie Robertson\u2014later revealed that the energy and looseness of Rainy Day Women<\/em> helped define their early identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In interviews, Robertson recalled the joy and unpredictability of recording with Dylan, noting that Rainy Day Women<\/em> was \u201clike nothing we\u2019d ever heard\u2014rowdy, loose, a song that didn\u2019t care if it was messy or off-key.\u201d That spirit, he said, carried into their debut album Music from Big Pink<\/em>, widely considered a landmark in rock history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The irony of it all is rich: a song deemed frivolous and senseless by one rock legend was a creative spark for another group of artists who would influence generations to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s another layer to the story as well. Some historians argue that Jagger\u2019s criticism wasn\u2019t merely aesthetic\u2014it was competitive. By 1966, Dylan had already made the leap from folk icon to rock innovator, something Jagger and the Stones were still perfecting.
