The rocker paid tribute to his mother by quoting lyrics from his song \u201cThe Wish,\u201d which describes his younger years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI remember in the morning mom hearing your alarm clock ring. I\u2019d lie in bed and listen to you getting ready for work, the sound of your makeup case on the sink. We\u2019ll find us a little rock \u2018n roll bar and we\u2019ll go out and dance,\u201d the lyrics read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Born Adele Zerilli in Brooklyn on May 4, 1925, she moved to Freehold, N.J. in 1940, where she and husband Doug Springsteen raised three children, Virginia, Bruce and Pamela. She was of Italian descent, and raised Springsteen as a Catholic, attending mass frequently at St. Rose of Lima Church in Freehold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.guim.co.uk\/img\/media\/b10758fb08a88ce3e68d73008fa702053f280521\/0_0_2970_1781\/master\/2970.jpg?width=1200&amp;height=900&amp;quality=85&amp;auto=format&amp;fit=crop&amp;s=743b9f4d7e7f0e088efbf7fef87c1d5b\" alt=\"Bruce Springsteen's mother, Adele Zerilli Springsteen, dies at age 98 | Bruce Springsteen | The Guardian\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While Springsteen\u2019s father worked a number of jobs to support the family, Adele became the primary breadwinner working as a secretary, earning enough money to buy Bruce his first guitar, a moment Springsteen immortalized in the lyrics to his song, \u201cThe Wish\u201d as a \u201cbrand-new Japanese guitar\u201d under the Christmas tree \u201cand how proud and happy you always looked walking home from work.\u201d The Springsteens moved from New Jersey to California when Bruce was a teenager, but Bruce stayed in Freehold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In later years, the Springsteen matriarch cut a mean rug at her son\u2019s shows, joining him on stage at the Wells Fargo Arena in Philadelphia for \u201cDancing in the Dark\u201d and shaking a tailfeather to \u201cRamrod\u201d at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNot bad for almost 90,\u201d Springsteen told the Philadelphia crowd in 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adele Springsteen loved to dance, and her Rock and Roll Hall of Famer son obliged often, taking her to local Jersey spots like The Wonder Bar in Asbury Park for a night out watching Eddie Testa or other entertainment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cloudfront-us-east-1.images.arcpublishing.com\/gray\/7THHR44XVRGQ5HE46JSR5CMNFQ.jpg\" alt=\"Bruce Springsteen's mother Adele Springsteen, a fan favorite who danced at his shows, dies at 98\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy mother loves to dance,\u201d Springsteen said during a 2021 performance at Springsteen on Broadway in New York.. \u201cShe grew up in the \u201940s \u2026 (with) the big bands and the swing bands, and that was a time when dancing was an existential act.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Springsteen&nbsp;told Today in 2021&nbsp;that despite her battle with Alzheimer\u2019s, his mother still recognized him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe can\u2019t speak. She can\u2019t stand. She can\u2019t feed herself. But when she sees me, there is always a smile. Still a smile. And there\u2019s still a kiss,\u201d Springsteen said. \u201cAnd there\u2019s a sound which she makes when she sees me. This is what she has put her trust in and lived her life by and which, despite all she has suffered, she carries on with to this moment, as if life\u2019s beauty never deserted her.
