In a performance that’s quickly become a fan favorite, Scottish synth-pop band CHVRCHES brought their signature atmospheric sound to BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge, covering The 1975’s haunting breakup anthem “Somebody Else.” What followed was a raw, emotionally layered rendition that honored the original while elevating it into a cinematic, electro-pop experience.

From the moment Lauren Mayberry began singing the opening lines, there was an undeniable shift in the room. Her voice, at once delicate and powerful, carried an aching vulnerability that pierced through the synth haze. Backed by Iain Cook and Martin Doherty’s lush, brooding instrumentation, CHVRCHES didn’t just cover the song — they transformed it. The tempo was slowed slightly, the production stripped back in moments, allowing Mayberry’s vocals to shine through with chilling clarity.

“I’ve never heard ‘Somebody Else’ like this before. Lauren’s voice adds such a devastating edge — I cried.”
“This is the kind of cover that makes you forget the original for a moment. CHVRCHES just get the heartbreak.”

The Live Lounge has long been a space where artists are pushed to reinterpret well-loved tracks, and CHVRCHES rose to the challenge with style and soul. They leaned into the emotional core of the song, channeling themes of jealousy, regret, and longing with subtle intensity. Their version feels less like a cover and more like an emotional response — as if CHVRCHES are telling the same story from a different, equally valid point of view.

As the final notes faded out, Mayberry’s last breath lingered, hanging in the air with almost ghostly stillness. It was the kind of performance that didn’t need flashy theatrics — the emotion spoke loud enough.

This cover isn’t just a tribute — it’s a revelation.

Watch it. Feel it. Lose yourself in it. CHVRCHES’ “Somebody Else” is Live Lounge at its absolute best.
