At 76, Billy Joel isn\u2019t calling it quits. But the Piano Man is hitting pause\u2014just long enough to take care of something he never saw coming: a brain condition that nearly took him off his feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In May 2025, fans were shocked when Billy Joel announced the cancellation of his upcoming concerts. The reason? A condition called Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH)\u2014a rare neurological disorder that affects balance, movement, and cognition. \u201cI feel fine. My balance sucks. It\u2019s like being on a boat,\u201d Joel explained during an appearance on the Club Random with Bill Maher podcast. \u201cThey keep calling it a brain disorder, which sounds a lot worse than what I\u2019m feeling.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Though the diagnosis sounded scary, Joel made it clear he wasn\u2019t in pain or feeling ill\u2014just off-balance and a bit dizzy. And while the term \u201cbrain disorder\u201d may spark alarm, Joel has stayed calm and focused on treatment. NPH is caused by excess fluid in the brain\u2019s ventricles. It can mimic symptoms of Alzheimer\u2019s or Parkinson\u2019s, often leading to misdiagnosis. For Joel, the main issue has been trouble walking steadily\u2014something especially difficult for a performer used to commanding the stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thankfully, NPH is treatable. Joel underwent surgery earlier this year to relieve pressure on his brain and is now in physical therapy. His doctors say the prognosis is good, and those close to him remain hopeful. Joel himself remains optimistic and grounded: \u201cI\u2019m OK. It was scary, but I wanted to say, don\u2019t worry about me being deathly ill.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While some fans worried the diagnosis could mean retirement, Joel reassured the public that this is not the end of his career. His longtime creative director told reporters, \u201cKnowing the way he\u2019s built, all arrows point to him making a full recovery.\u201d He\u2019s not rushing back into the spotlight, though. For now, recovery comes first. The Piano Man knows that pushing too hard too soon isn\u2019t worth it\u2014not when he\u2019s got a chance to come back stronger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
