Netflix star Owen Cooper stuns Americans with British slang word on Jimmy Fallon

He’s the breakout star of Netflix’s hit drama Adolescence, but Owen Cooper still carries himself like your awkward, lovable mate from across the pond. During a charming and hilariously candid appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the young British actor revealed what it’s like to receive praise from Leonardo DiCaprio, why he can’t bring himself to watch his own work, and why he thinks American snacks are absolutely “tragic.”

Fresh off the global success of Adolescence—the gritty, emotionally charged series that follows the unraveling of youth in a fractured modern world—Owen told Jimmy he still hasn’t fully processed the acclaim.

“I still feel like a fraud, honestly. Everyone’s like, ‘You were incredible!’ and I’m like… are you sure?” he joked.

But one fan left him completely speechless: Leonardo DiCaprio.

“He came up to me at this thing in LA and said, ‘You did a great job, man.’ And I just froze. I think I said ‘Cheers, mate’ and then immediately questioned everything I’ve ever done.”

Fallon couldn’t contain his shock—“LEONARDO DICAPRIO told you that?!”—to which Owen sheepishly nodded, clearly still processing the surreal moment.

Despite rubbing shoulders with Hollywood royalty, Cooper admitted he can’t even bear to watch himself on screen.

“I’ve only seen the first 10 minutes of Adolescence. I watched it through my fingers and had to leave the room,” he said. “I hate my voice, my face, all of it. It’s like hearing yourself on voicemail but times a million.”

To lighten the mood, Owen brought along a cheeky gift for Fallon: a bag of British snacks—and plenty of attitude to go with them.

“You Americans get your sweets all wrong,” he teased. “Too much corn syrup. Too many colors. No Crunchies.”

Inside the snack pack? Pickled Onion Monster MunchFlake barsJaffa Cakes, and the ever-reliable Custard Creams. Fallon gamely tried them all, grimaced at the Monster Munch, and declared the Flake “unnecessarily crumbly.” Cooper couldn’t stop laughing.

But behind the self-effacing humor and snack-fueled banter is a serious talent. Cooper’s performance in Adolescence has been described as “raw,” “disarmingly honest,” and “heartbreaking”—earning him comparisons to a young Timothée Chalamet. When asked what’s next, Owen simply shrugged.

“I don’t know, really. I just want to do stuff that scares me. That makes me feel something. And ideally doesn’t involve me having to watch myself.”

It’s clear that with talent, humility, and a suitcase full of chocolate biscuits, Owen Cooper is just getting started.
