When Queen was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, the band found a heartfelt way to honor their late frontman Freddie Mercury, who passed away a decade earlier in 1991. In a surprise moment that touched everyone in attendance, Brian May and Roger Taylor invited Freddie’s mother, Jer Bulsara, to the stage to accept the award on behalf of her son.

A Night of Tribute and Remembrance

Queen has long been dedicated to preserving Freddie Mercury’s legacy—from the iconic 1992 tribute concert to establishing the Mercury Phoenix Trust and collaborating with artists who celebrate his music. At the prestigious induction ceremony, Brian and Roger made sure that the spirit of their late bandmate was present in a deeply personal way.

After delivering a speech acknowledging Freddie and bassist John Deacon’s absence, Brian May addressed the crowd: “We’re a little sad that Freddie and John can’t be here with us, but they both send their love.” He then hinted at a special surprise to come.

Roger Taylor followed with an emotional announcement: “Freddie’s mother Jer is here tonight, and we’d love her to accept his award in place of him.”

A Standing Ovation for Queen’s Matriarch

The crowd erupted in applause as Jer Bulsara, then 78 years old, shyly made her way to the stage. The warmth and love from the audience were palpable as she held Freddie’s award aloft, thanking everyone before leaving the stage accompanied by Brian and Roger.

Jer’s presence at the ceremony symbolized the enduring bond between Queen and Freddie’s family. She, along with Freddie’s sister Kashmira Bulsara, remained close with the band members and regularly attended events celebrating Freddie’s life and music until Jer’s passing in 2016 at age 94.

Remembering Jer Bulsara

Brian May later paid tribute to Jer, describing her as “a warm and devoted mum to Freddie, and, like Freddie, always had a strong twinkle in the eye.” He recalled how she stayed close to the band following Freddie’s death, sharing, “We always consulted her in our work that continued after we lost Freddie… she was with us all the way.”

The 2001 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction stands as a poignant reminder of the deep respect and love Queen holds for Freddie Mercury—not just as a legendary performer but as a beloved family member whose legacy continues to inspire generations.
