Country star Scotty McCreery gave fans a heartwarming glimpse into his family life when he shared a sweet Instagram video of his young son, Merrick Avery “Avery” McCreery, singing along to the music of legendary George Strait. The moment reminded fans not only of Scotty’s deep admiration for Strait but also of the way music continues to shape the McCreery family.

Avery’s Sweet Tribute to George Strait

On March 13, 2025, McCreery posted a clip in which his son can be heard singing in the background. When asked by Scotty, “Who sings that song?” Avery quickly replied: “George Strait.”

Fans immediately flooded the comments with love, calling the video “precious” and “the cutest.” Though Avery wasn’t visible on camera, his voice was enough to steal the spotlight.

Scotty and his wife Gabi McCreery welcomed Avery on October 24, 2022, and the singer has often spoken about how fatherhood has changed his life. Avery’s middle name honors Gabi’s father, and McCreery described his son’s birth as “7 lbs 13oz of nothin but love.”

McCreery has long considered George Strait one of his biggest influences. In 2021, he released the hit single “Damn Strait” as a tribute to the “King of Country.” He explained in an interview:

“George had a song for everybody. He was everybody’s country singer. He had songs for cowboys, for love, for heartbreak. He was the ultimate cowboy and the King for a reason.”

McCreery even tied Strait’s music to his own love story with his wife, noting that “Check Yes or No” reflects how they met as kids and grew into lifelong partners.

The Story Behind “Five More Minutes”

While Avery’s tribute captured hearts, fans also continue to connect with McCreery’s most defining hit, “Five More Minutes.”

The ballad, released in 2017, was inspired by the death of his paternal grandfather in 2015. Written with Monty Criswell and Frank Rogers, the song reflects on life’s fleeting moments, from childhood memories to saying goodbye to a loved one.

McCreery recalled:

“At eighty-six my grandpa said there’s angels in the room / All the family gathered ’round knew the time was coming soon.”

The emotional foundation of the song helped McCreery pivot from trying to write mainstream hits to creating music from personal experience. That authenticity resonated with fans, propelling the song to become one of his career’s defining moments.

Career Setbacks and Second Chances

Before “Five More Minutes” became a hit, McCreery’s career faced turbulence. Dropped by Mercury Nashville after the underperformance of “Southern Belle,” he later signed with Triple Tigers and rebuilt his career.

Since then, his achievements have included:

  • Selling over 4 million albums
  • Becoming the first country artist and youngest male artist to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 with Clear as Day (2011)
  • Earning Pandora Billionaire status with over one billion streams
  • Being inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in April 2024 by Josh Turner

Why the Song Still Resonates

“Five More Minutes” continues to resonate because of its universal theme—cherishing time with loved ones. The heartfelt lyrics remain timeless, reminding fans to treasure the people in their lives while they still can.

For Scotty McCreery, the song has become more than a hit; it’s a reflection of his personal journey, family values, and growth as an artist. And now, as his son Avery begins singing along to George Strait, it’s clear that music—and family—will always be at the heart of McCreery’s story.
