Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea recently confirmed the band is working on new music together. He addressed the band’s dynamics after working together for years in a statement shared on Mojo4Music.
The bassist discussed the band’s current creative process and reflected on the unique challenges of working within the long-standing group dynamic.
“We’ve been writing music together, recording at [guitarist] John Frusciante’s house, and the music feels great,” Flea said. “Ultimately, once we start playing, it’s about… just catching a magic groove and doing it good.”
When addressing the difference between crafting a solo album and a Chili Peppers record, Flea offered insight into the band’s collaborative nature.
“It’s like being in a marriage with four people that’s always moving and changing, all these challenges and all the things that you have to deal with,” he continued. “Egos are inescapable and my ego is as big and as fragile as anybody’s. But it’s always, no matter what, this intrinsic part of who I am and it’s alive and it’s beautiful and you never know what shape it’s going to take next. I really feel like that right now.”
The band’s return to the studio comes at a particularly active time for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Multiple projects are in development across different platforms.
This new recording project would mark the band’s next chapter following their highly productive 2022 period. Exclaim! reported that the new material would follow their twin 2022 albums Unlimited Love and Return of the Dream Canteen. Both albums showcased the classic lineup’s renewed creative energy after John Frusciante’s return to the band.
The band focuses on their collective work while Flea simultaneously prepares for a solo venture. Guitar World noted that the bassist is set to release his solo debut album, Honora, in March. This marks his first major musical project outside the band’s signature sound.
The timing coincides with another significant Red Hot Chili Peppers milestone. FOTKAI revealed that Netflix is preparing to premiere a documentary titled The Rise of the Red Hot Chili Peppers on March 20, 2026. The documentary will explore the band’s formative years and feature interviews with Flea and Anthony Kiedis about their early creative stages.
The convergence of new music, solo projects, and documentary coverage suggests 2026 will be a landmark year for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The band continues to evolve while honoring their decades-long musical partnership.
