Jeremy Asbrock, guitarist and vocalist for Ace Frehley’s solo band, recently shared details about his final conversation with the late KISS guitarist in an interview with Metal Mayhem ROC.
The emotional revelation came when Asbrock was asked to share an untold story about his time with Frehley. His response highlighted the profound impact of their last exchange.
When asked to share an Ace Frehley story that he hadn’t told many times before, Asbrock provided a deeply personal account.
“Okay, this is pretty heavy, but it’s still a story that I like to tell,” Asbrock said. “I talked to him on the phone 12 hours before he fell. This was after his first fall and I was just checking in because I had not talked to him since. You know he was doing good.”
Asbrock continued to describe the conversation’s positive tone and Frehley’s plans for that evening.
“He was going to an AA meeting that night and just like, ‘Okay, well cool, man. I’ll see you next weekend,’” he recalled. “We got off the phone and he messaged me immediately. He said, ‘Man, thanks for the call. It really lifted my spirits.’ I said, ‘Of course, man. I love you.’ Then he messaged me back, you know, love you too, brother. That was the last thing I ever said to Ace. I love you.”
The guitarist reflected on how this final exchange changed his perspective on expressing affection to those close to him.
“It made me not shy about telling people that more often because man, you never know when that’s the last time,” Asbrock concluded. “I feel really good that the last thing I ever said to Ace and the last thing he ever heard me or read me say to him was, I love you.”
This heartfelt account provides insight into the personal relationships that sustained Frehley during his final years and the lasting impact he had on his bandmates.
YouTube reports indicated that Frehley died at age 74 in New Jersey surrounded by family after suffering injuries from a fall at his studio the previous month. The founding KISS member, known as “Space Ace,” had been on life support for some time before his passing.
Asbrock served as a key performer in Frehley’s active solo band during the guitarist’s later career. Loaded Culture reported that the band supported recent albums including the 2024 release 10,000 Volts, which topped Billboard’s Hard Music and Rock Album charts.
The loss marked the end of an era for rock music. Star Registry noted that Frehley was widely recognized as the original lead guitarist and co-founding member of KISS. He played a pivotal role in shaping the band’s distinctive sound and theatrical stage presence.
Frehley’s solo career had experienced a resurgence in recent years. Guitar World documented that after keeping it together following his KISS departure, he led the successful solo album Frehley’s Comet in 1987. The album almost went gold on the strength of its singles and marked a significant comeback in his musical journey.
