On Wednesday, July 30, the music world gathered to say goodbye to a true pioneer. A little over a week after he passed away, Ozzy Osbourne was laid to rest in a deeply moving ceremony that paid tribute to the man behind the myth. Honoring his final wishes, the Godfather of Metal was buried on his massive 250 acre estate in Buckinghamshire, England. His final resting place sits quietly beside a peaceful lake right in the middle of the property. It is exactly where he always imagined he would end up.
The goodbye started with an emotional funeral procession rolling through the streets of Birmingham. It was his hometown and the undeniable birthplace of heavy metal. Fans lined the streets in total silence as the cars paused at Black Sabbath Bridge to honor the band that shifted the course of music history. The private ceremony that took place afterward at the Osbourne estate brought together an incredible circle of friends and fellow musicians. The crowd of mourners included Elton John, James Hetfield, Zakk Wylde, Robert Trujillo, Corey Taylor, Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson, and Yungblud. Naturally, his Black Sabbath brothers Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward were there to see him off.
Flowers covered the burial site, including one massive tribute near the lake that proudly spelled out “OZZY F*CKING OSBOURNE” in bright blooms. Another arrangement sat on top of a fountain, which fans might have recognized from the hearse during the earlier public memorial. Zakk Wylde played music during the quiet service and was later spotted walking away with two 12 string acoustic guitars. It was a lingering reminder of the songs that filled the garden that afternoon.
This burial was not just a final formality. It was the exact scenario he dreamed up and wrote about in his 2010 autobiography, I Am Ozzy. He specifically asked not to be cremated. Instead, he wanted to be buried under a tree. He joked that it should be a crabapple tree so the neighborhood kids could make wine out of him and get completely drunk. He even playfully wrote his own future headstone, saying it should read: Ozzy Osbourne, born 1948. Died, whenever. He bit the head off a bat.
Today, in a quiet corner of a private garden under the British sky and next to still waters, that vision is finally a reality. Ozzy Osbourne has left us, but his voice, his beautiful chaos, and his spirit will absolutely live on forever.
