Guitarist Sir Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor have overseen a brand-new Dolby Atmos surround-sound mix of Queen I, promising an immersive listening experience that “nobody has ever heard quite like this.”
Last year’s remastered reissue set the stage, but this latest version pushes the boundaries of what’s possible with modern audio technology. “I’m particularly excited about this new Dolby Atmos version of what we now call QUEEN I,” May said, reflecting on his recent return to the mixing sessions after being sidelined by a “health hiccup” during the initial surround sound conversion. “I was thrilled to rejoin the team and add my own contribution to this multichannel mix.” May teased that dedicated fans will discover “a few nice adventurous Easter eggs” hidden throughout the Blu-ray release—special touches designed to delight those intimately familiar with the album.
Roger Taylor shared the excitement: “At last, we get our first album to sound as we imagined it should sound… phew!”
Breathing New Life into a 50-Year-Old Classic
Under the executive production of May and Taylor, Queen’s longtime audio-production team—Justin Shirley-Smith, Joshua J. Macrae, and Kris Fredriksson—reconstructed the original stems from the 2024 stereo mix to give every vocal and instrument its own distinct space in the sound field. Shirley-Smith remarked, “Queen’s music was designed for immersive formats. It’s dramatic and powerful and has a lot of dynamics. The original album was recorded more than 50 years ago, but it was so ambitious musically, rhythmically, and lyrically. It’s beyond belief really, and it’s such a joy for us to work on.”
By carefully panning and processing each element, the team has added remarkable depth and dimension without sacrificing the signature layered sound that Queen fans cherish. “We’re confident that the stereo mix is already excellent,” Shirley-Smith explained, “but this expanded sound field allows us to feature the backing tracks without masking the intricate details Queen is famous for.”
A Royal Treatment at Abbey Road
The final Atmos mix was completed by Lewis Jones at the legendary Abbey Road Studios, known worldwide for its state-of-the-art immersive mixing facilities. Jones brought extensive experience from major Dolby Atmos projects to ensure Queen I delivers a truly enveloping sonic experience for longtime fans and new listeners alike.
