Amy Lee only has one tattoo, and it holds a special meaning.

In an April 13 interview with Netflix to promote the band Evanescence’s newest single, “Afterlife,” for the animated adaptation of Devil May Cry, the lead singer showed off her “one tattoo” and detailed its connection to the gaming community.

“Life hearts!” Lee exclaims in the clip while holding up her left wrist. The symbol, three black outlines of pixelated hearts filled with red ink, comes from the classic Nintendo video game franchise The Legend of Zelda. In the game, the icons keep track of your health.

“I am a gamer,” Lee, 43, explained. “I am a huge Legend of Zelda fan, for life.”

She went on to say that “Ocarina of Time,” the franchise’s 1998 installment, was “my first RPG [role-playing game] experience.”

“I still play it from time to time to just calm my heart down and go to sleep,” she shared.

But Lee has a much deeper connection to the franchise as it’s been “an ongoing life journey with me and my family and the Legend of Zelda.”

Lee first revealed her tattoo in a May 23, 2018, Facebook post. She wrote, “I held out for 36 years but today I got my first tattoo. It’s exactly what my brother wanted, but didn’t get the chance to get. I always thought it was cool but it means more to me now.”

Robby, Lee’s brother, died in January 2018 after a years-long battle with severe epilepsy; he was 24.

She added: “Besides the fact that playing Zelda together was one of our favorite things, he took a piece of my heart with him when he left. I love you forever, Robby!”

Evanescence’s 2021 album, The Bitter Truth, is partly born out of the grief Lee experienced after the loss of her brother. At the time of its release, the rock singer spoke to PEOPLE about creating the album

“Our music has always been a very sacred place for me to really just bare my soul. On the grief and everything, it has been really healing for me, having that outlet, to not only be able to pour my pain into, but also to be able to listen back, and reflect back, and see that something good was coming out of something so painful that honors the people we’ve lost, to still be able to stand back up and be your best self, and remember,” Lee said.

“Not to throw it away and let it go and try to tune it out and pretend like it didn’t happen — that’s not what he would want. He would want me to be the best me I can be. And I know if he can see me right now, he’s totally banging his head to this album and so proud of it.”

Elsewhere in the Netflix interview, Lee discussed the band’s upcoming music.

“We’ve been writing for a new album,” the singer said. “Creation is just something that we need right now. I feel a sense of purpose to put something good, something empowering, into the world.”
