When fans think of Queen’s greatest songs, classics like Bohemian RhapsodyDon’t Stop Me Now, and We Will Rock You immediately come to mind. Yet, Brian May—the legendary guitarist of the band—recently surprised fans by revealing that his favorite Queen song isn’t the iconic Bohemian Rhapsody, but a lesser-known gem: The Miracle.

Written during a challenging period in Freddie Mercury’s life, The Miracle carries a unique and heartfelt magic that deeply resonates with May. “I am going to pick a song that not everyone out there knows called The Miracle, which Freddie wrote and which I always thought has a weird and unique magic,” May explained. “Especially since Freddie wrote it at a time when it was very difficult for him to be optimistic and he was. It’s just very beautiful and I go for that.”

The Miracle, released as the final single from Queen’s 1989 album of the same name, marked a poignant moment in the band’s history. While Freddie Mercury and bassist John Deacon laid down the core chord progression, all four band members collaborated on the lyrics and musical ideas. In keeping with their collective spirit, the track was credited to the entire band.

Unlike the sprawling six-minute suite of Bohemian RhapsodyThe Miracle offers a more concise yet emotionally rich expression. Its optimism during a difficult time for Freddie—who was grappling with personal and health struggles—makes the song all the more touching.

Brian May’s choice sheds light on a deeply personal side of Queen’s music, reminding fans that beyond the bombast and theatricality, there are moments of quiet beauty and resilience. The Miracle stands as a testament to Freddie Mercury’s enduring optimism and the band’s collaborative brilliance—a hidden treasure cherished by those who know its story.

For Queen fans and newcomers alike, The Miracle offers a fresh perspective on the band’s legacy, revealing the heart behind the legend.
