The Background:

In recent weeks, the Zac Brown Band has undoubtedly been up to something, the longtime country hitmakers wiping clean their social media, setting an ominous countdown on their website and teasing the big new chapter that lies just ahead.

All of that led to the announcement of a residency at The Sphere in Las Vegas, a forthcoming album, titled Love & Fearand an unlikely collaboration with hip-hop great, Snoop Dogg.

Their new single, ‘Let It Run’, arrives Friday (July 18), with an ever-important message in tow. It’s about more than just smoking weed, it’s about living, letting go and letting be.

The Sound:

While meant to be their grand entrance into this bold, masterful new era, ‘Let It Run’ upholds that quintessential Zac Brown Band sound. The song opens with the scratchy pull of acoustic strings, setting a laidback scene reminiscent of classics like ‘Chicken Fried’, ‘Knee Deep’ and ‘Toes’.

With the chorus comes the resounding wail of an organ and the crisp jangle of an emphatic rhythm. The group’s trademark harmonies swell and fade from verse to verse, adding texture to what began as a relatively stark composition.

Snoop’s part soon comes in, the emboldened arrangement falling away to allow the legendary rapper’s own rhymes and sharp sequencer beats to come through.

Overall, ‘Let It Run’ is a layered song, its sound just as complex as its underlying message.

The Meaning:

“Everyone was gettin’ high
Passin’ flowers ’round the fire
No one even gave a damn
Til it landed in your hand”

Yes, ‘Let It Run’ is a song about smoking weed. That’s obvious from the start. However, underneath its references to joints, blunts and flower lies an important message.

As the song opens, listeners are planted in the midst of a smoking circle. Friends and loved ones are passing around that sweet leaf, getting high around a fire. Sounds lovely. That is, until the joint comes to one particular person.

This someone doesn’t seem to be able to “hang.” They’re too caught up in the ways of the world – or in this case, the ways of the blunt – and are unable to enjoy the ride because of it.

As the song goes: “Now, you’re overly concerned / With the way that cherry burns / And think you’re ’bout to spit / On that joint I’m ’bout to hit…”

Here, the song references a problem that can occur when partaking in the wacky tobacky: canoeing. A joint that has been rolled unevenly could begin to “canoe” when smoking. This means that one side burns down faster than the other, leading to an uneven smoke and potentially a waste in product. A common remedy for this could be dampening the faster burning side with saliva in order to slow the burn and even out the cherry.

Let It Run' by Zac Brown Band (feat. Snoop Dogg) – Lyrics & Meaning | Holler

The song pleads that they not do this, begging the person to just let it run, or in a deeper sense, to let go and let be.

“Just let it run, let it run
If it’s burnin’ kinda funny
We can roll another one
It ain’t like we’re down to crumbs
We got more where that came from
Don’t be spittin’ on my blunt
Just let that motherfucker run”

Come the chorus, the band proclaim there’s plenty more to go around, they don’t have to ruin a perfectly good high just because things aren’t burning the way they think that they should. They can simply roll another one and move on.

The bandleader isn’t trying to harsh anyone’s buzz, or dictate the way they feel about and do things. He just doesn’t think its worth all the worry and gripe. We live in a day and age when it feels like all we can do is fret, so why bring that into a circle where peace and harmony should reign.

Snoop Dogg agrees come his verse, the artist rapping, “Let that bitch run / Light some, pass one / Maybe two / What it do? / Fuckin’ with some superglue.”

When the only thing you should be having is a good time and taking a load off, why bring your trivial cares and arbitrary worries into the mix? You’re not doing anyone any favors, especially yourself. So just let it run. Let yourself enjoy the moment and leave tomorrow for then.

Jekyll + Hyde

“I don’t need your damn saliva
On this tangerine sativa
Don’t be spittin’ on my blunt
Just let that motherfucker run”

Everyone was gettin’ high
Passing flowers ‘round the fire
No one even gave a damn
Until it landed in your hand
Now you’re overly concerned
With the way that cherry burns
And you think you’re ‘bout to spit
On that joint I’m ‘bout to hit

Just let it run
Let it run
If it’s burning kinda funny
We can roll another one
It ain’t like we’re down to crumbs
We got more where that came from
Don’t be spittin’ on my blunt
Just let that motherfucker run

I ain’t trying to police
The way y’all smoke your weed
Didn’t mean to haunt your buzz
I just said something because
We got cars that drive themselves
We’ve put people into space
But can we please stop doing things like it’s 1998

Just let it run, let it run
If it’s burning kinda funny
We can roll another one
It ain’t like we’re down to crumbs
We got more where that came from
Don’t be spittin’ on my blunt
Just let that motherfucker run

[Snoop Dogg]
Let that bitch run, light some, pass one
Maybe two, what it do, fuckin’ with some superglue
Spittin’ on my bleezy, homie take it easy
Wet mouth crumb snatchin’ son of a bitch
What makes you think I wanna hit a blunt full of spit
You full of shit, I’m movin’ solo
Smokin’ dolo, back to back sacks with Zac
Let ‘em know-though

Just let it run, let it run
If it’s burning kinda funny
We can roll another one
It ain’t like we’re down to crumbs
We got more where that came from
Don’t be spittin’ on my blunt
Just let that motherfucker run
I don’t need your damn saliva
On this Tangerine Sativa
Don’t be spittin’ on my blunt
Just let that motherfucker run

Let it Run baby
For the love of God
Let that motherfucker run
Leave it alone
Run, Run baby.
