At 76, Billy Joel isn’t calling it quits. But the Piano Man is hitting pause—just long enough to take care of something he never saw coming: a brain condition that nearly took him off his feet.

In May 2025, fans were shocked when Billy Joel announced the cancellation of his upcoming concerts. The reason? A condition called Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH)—a rare neurological disorder that affects balance, movement, and cognition. “I feel fine. My balance sucks. It’s like being on a boat,” Joel explained during an appearance on the Club Random with Bill Maher podcast. “They keep calling it a brain disorder, which sounds a lot worse than what I’m feeling.”

Though the diagnosis sounded scary, Joel made it clear he wasn’t in pain or feeling ill—just off-balance and a bit dizzy. And while the term “brain disorder” may spark alarm, Joel has stayed calm and focused on treatment. NPH is caused by excess fluid in the brain’s ventricles. It can mimic symptoms of Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s, often leading to misdiagnosis. For Joel, the main issue has been trouble walking steadily—something especially difficult for a performer used to commanding the stage.

Thankfully, NPH is treatable. Joel underwent surgery earlier this year to relieve pressure on his brain and is now in physical therapy. His doctors say the prognosis is good, and those close to him remain hopeful. Joel himself remains optimistic and grounded: “I’m OK. It was scary, but I wanted to say, don’t worry about me being deathly ill.”

While some fans worried the diagnosis could mean retirement, Joel reassured the public that this is not the end of his career. His longtime creative director told reporters, “Knowing the way he’s built, all arrows point to him making a full recovery.” He’s not rushing back into the spotlight, though. For now, recovery comes first. The Piano Man knows that pushing too hard too soon isn’t worth it—not when he’s got a chance to come back stronger.

As fate would have it, Joel’s health news comes just as a new HBO documentary, Billy Joel: And So It Goes, offers a raw, emotional look into his personal life. The doc touches on everything: his rise to fame, his decades-long music career, and even his past struggles with depression and alcohol. Joel, who has openly talked about surviving two suicide attempts, now faces his current battle with a new mindset: grounded, grateful, and determined to fight forward.

Billy Joel isn’t just a hitmaker—he’s a survivor. From heartbreak to hospital beds, from Madison Square Garden to moments of vulnerability, Joel has always turned pain into power. Now, faced with a diagnosis that would rattle anyone, he’s choosing resilience. This isn’t the end of the song—it’s just the quiet part before the next big chorus.
